It's time to bring your data back to Europe
Welcome back to the Wolkskrant!
It is that time of the year where half the office is wearing a sweater and the other half has somehow already switched to wearing short sleeves. Three years of solving hard problems, and keeping customers happy, but the thermostat debate? Still unresolved.
This month, I brought you:
Introducing DataBaas, the sovereign data and AI platform
Using AI for weather prediction models
A curated list of other interesting reads
Enjoy!

Your data stack is a political choice. Make it deliberately.
Data platforms are no longer just a technical decision. Where your data lives, who can access it and under which laws, are questions that matter more than they did a year ago.
For a long time, the answer was simple: Databricks, Snowflake, or Fabric. Great tools. American tools. Tools that come with terms and conditions subject to US law.
We kept asking ourselves: why is there no serious European alternative? One built on open standards, deployable anywhere and without sending your data across the Atlantic?
We couldn’t find one. So we built it.
DataBaas is a complete data & AI platform built on open-source tooling and running on the European infrastructure of your choice: Scaleway, Hetzner, or your own cluster. You pick where your data lives. We keep it running.
While everyone is focused on chatbots, AI is quietly revolutionizing weather prediction.
Traditionally, weather prediction relies on radiative transfer calculations: complex physics that simulate what a satellite observes when it looks down at Earth. The traditional software (RTTOV) works well, but running it at scale is slow and computationally expensive.
Esther trained a neural network architecture called DeepONet to learn the same physics and achieved 97% faster results, without losing accuracy. Not a shortcut, but a smarter path to the same answer.
